Advicenow- our public legal information website

Advicenow – www.advicenow.org.uk – is an independent website run by Law for Life. It provides accurate, up-to-date information on rights and the law.

We believe that everyone should have access to good quality information to help them understand their legal issue or situation and enable them to deal with it effectively.

We aim achieve this by doing three things:

  •  We bring together the best internet information on law-related issues and make it available through our internet search.
  • We produce Action Guides providing practical guidance on how to deal with law-related issues.
  • We campaign to improve the quality of available legal information by stimulating debate about the need for information and by producing resources and training for those engaged in work.

Our Advicenow internet search service brings together the best information on the law and rights from over 250 UK websites. This selection isn’t done by computer; we handpick every link, check that it’s up-to-date and covers the important issues. We summarise it so that you know whether it is what you are looking for or not.

“It’s a good job your site is out there offering impartial and useful information on many current life situations. Impartial information is hard to come by, but quality impartial information is even harder. I have signposted many individuals and organisations to your site and they are always impressed.” Counsellor, Derby

We want to break the mould of dry legal information that informs but doesn’t offer practical help and guidance. We don’t just provide information about the law; we tell people where to go, what to do, and how to do it. Our guides acknowledge the stress readers are experiencing and offer advice on the practical skills and techniques needed to solve their problem.

We use a range of learning techniques to get the message across: clear, straightforward language, jargon-busters, case studies, diagrams, films, sound files, example letters, quizzes, and pictures.

We test our guides with a mixture of individuals and experts before publication to ensure that they are as effective and helpful as possible. And we don’t stop there – we design and test new methods all the time so that we increase our understanding of what works, and our guides get better.

“I have used your guide to find out if I should appeal (I appreciated your very frank advice). I’ve now used it to ask for an appeal. It was really helpful and I don’t know what I would have done if I hadn’t found it.” Advicenow site user

We want to see the quality of information improve for everybody so we do our best to encourage and help other organisations to produce more effective information. We do this by stimulating debate about what works well and by drawing together good practice with the results of our pilots and evaluations to provide resources for information providers. We have produced the Better Information website and handbook, and provide training and consultancy for organisations producing information on law-related issues.

Advicenow was incorporated into Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education in June 2013.
Advicenow was originally founded in 2001 and supported by Advice Services Alliance, the umbrella body for independent advice services in the UK. www.assauk.org.uk
