New training, Birmingham: Building Legal Capability: Section 21 Eviction Notices

Date: 6 March 2017
Time: 11.00 am– 4.00 pm
Venue: Northfield Baptist Church, 789 Bristol Road South, Northfield, B31 2NQ

What is the training about?

This training will help to develop a set of strategies for dealing with private renting housing problems, using Section 21 eviction notices as an example. It is about developing capacity to deal with legal problems (including getting specialist help, building skills and confidence, using legal information resources) not answering specific legal problems.

As a result of attending this course you will:

  • Understand what a section 21 eviction notice is and what it really means.
  • Be able to identify some of the pros and cons of challenging a landlord’s claim for a possession order.
  • Understand some of the reasons why a tenant may be able to challenge a landlord’s claim for a possession order.
  • Be able to identify sources of information and legal help available to help tenants facing eviction from their home.
  • Better understand the basic principles of effective public legal education.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at people who work with private renters. They might be based in a charity, tenants association or a faith organisation whose service users are seeking help to deal with private rented sector housing problems. This includes students, interns, volunteers or trustees who are unlikely to have any legal or advice training. This training can also be used to support those who currently provide legal advice, but would like to build the skills to teach public legal education.

Who delivers the training?

Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education is a charity that aims to increase access to justice by providing everyone with an awareness of their legal rights together with the confidence and skills to assert them. The Law for Life has been funded by the TDS to produce information and training for private renting organisations.
Law for Life’s AdviceNow website translates the law into accessible and engaging information which not only explains the law but empowers you to use it.

What is Public Legal Education?

Public Legal Education is an approach to educating the community at large about rights and legal issues that affect their lives. It has links with community development, education and complements legal and advice services.
