Building Legal Capability: Dealing with Disrepair

Date: 23 May 2017
Time: 09.30 am– 3.00 pm
Venue: Trust for London, 6 Middle Street, London EC1A 7PH

What is the training about?

This session deals with practical legal questions of disrepair and the relationship between landlord and tenant. It provides the opportunity to develop and practice key communication skills and the ability to identify and assess different courses of action for dealing with disrepair problems.

As a result of attending this course you will:

  • Understand the basic rights and responsibilities of landlords and tenants in relation to disrepair
  • Assess and develop a course of action for dealing with disrepair problems (in private renting and social housing)
  • Recognise and develop effective communication skills
  • Identify sources of support for disrepair problems
  • Better understand the basic principles of effective public legal education.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at people who work with renters in both private and social housing. They might be based in a charity, tenants association or a faith organisation whose service users are seeking help to deal with housing disrepair. This includes students, interns, volunteers or trustees who are unlikely to have any legal or advice training. This training can also be used to support those who currently provide legal advice, but would like to build the skills to teach public legal education.

Who delivers the training?

Law for Life: the Foundation for Public Legal Education is a charity that aims to increase access to justice by providing everyone with an awareness of their legal rights together with the confidence and skills to assert them.

Law for Life’s AdviceNow website translates the law into accessible and engaging information which not only explains the law but empowers you to use it.

Law for Life has been funded by Trust for London to deliver training for organisations working with private renters.
